The Importance of Annual Breast Exams

Breast screenings play a crucial role in the early detection and prevention of breast cancer. Regular screenings like mammograms can identify breast cancer at an early stage—often before any noticeable symptoms arise. Early detection increases the likelihood of successful treatment and significantly improves survival rates. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast cancer is detected early, in a localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 99%.

Mammograms use low-dose X-rays to detect abnormalities like lumps or changes in breast tissue that may not be felt during a physical exam. The earlier these changes are discovered, the easier it is to avoid having to resort to more aggressive options like chemotherapy.

Women ages 40 and above are generally advised to have annual mammograms, although this recommendation can vary based on personal risk factors such as family history, genetics, or previous health conditions. Women with a higher risk of developing breast cancer are advised to get annual mammograms as well as breast MRIs starting at age 30; your health care provider can determine your risk and advise an evidence-based protocol.

“Early detection is clearly the key to better outcomes when it comes to breast cancer,” said Dr. Raymond Kohne, radiologist with SOFHA’s Comprehensive Breast Center. “If we can detect a cancer the size of a marble or smaller, we can make a difference and not just a diagnosis. That’s why I encourage everyone to get yearly screening mammography and supplemental imaging as needed based on breast density and lifetime risk. Together, with appropriate screening, we can and will make a difference.”

In addition to mammograms, self-exams and clinical breast exams are important tools for monitoring breast health. Knowing how your breasts normally look and feel can help you detect changes early and seek medical advice promptly. Your provider can help to show you what to look for during self-exams so that you can feel confident evaluating your own body in between your official exams. Breast screenings empower women to take control of their health. By committing to regular screenings, women can significantly lower their risk of late-stage cancer, ensuring that if cancer does occur, it can be caught and treated in its earliest, most treatable stages.
