What is an Ultrasound? Ultrasound, also called sonography or ultrasonography, is a noninvasive imaging test that uses high-intensity sound waves to show structures inside the body. The images can be used to help guide diagnosis and treatment for many diseases and conditions. And, unlike X-rays, ultrasound doesn’t use radiation. Although most people associate ultrasound with pregnancy, your healthcare provider uses ultrasound to look at many different internal organs and other soft tissue like blood vessels.
