Medical Doctor, OB/GYN

OB/GYN

Until my senior year of high school, I wanted to be a chemical engineer. But the close relationship I had with my own family doctor – who actually delivered me — influenced me toward a career in medicine. I enjoyed seeing how he developed relationships with his patients and I loved the science of medicine. I started out thinking I would go into family medicine, but I was attracted to surgery, too. So, by going into obstetrics and gynecology, I found I could do surgery and deliver babies. And, really, delivering babies is my first love. I do enjoy people – I guess sometimes I talk too much! But I like getting to know my patients. I like to treat the person as a whole and not just as a diagnosis and I try to keep the relationship with my patients on a personal level. That’s important because 80 percent of what we learn about a patient actually is not through the physical exam but by listening to the history and seeing what the patient is going through. One of the beauties of seeing a doctor in our practice is that you have a primary caregiver who is also trained to see you on an emergency basis. Our backgrounds are varied and we have both male and female physicians, in case that’s an issue.

I’m originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, and got my medical degree from University of Louisville. I’ve been practicing medicine for 32 years, first in Nashville, but then my wife and I moved here with our four kids 23 years ago because of the excellent school system Kingsport. We love the outdoors and the natural beauty of this area, and we also love to travel – it’s my passion. My wife and I have enjoyed trips to Europe and New Zealand. I’m also a big baseball fan and still collect baseball cards. Up until the last couple of years, I went to spring training and played in fantasy baseball with the Dodgers. I played baseball in high school and just really love the game – almost as much as I love delivering babies!
